Overall positive, but I love this line:

It feels odd pressing the IE icon for anything other than browser testing.

Made me chuckle.

Chris Ziegler on HTC Making It Rain (Phones)

Chris Ziegler on HTC Making It Rain (Phones):
I enjoyed this piece on The Verge. Awesome bit here:

It’s simple: make a large high-end device, a smaller value device, and a QWERTY device. Maybe one or two other specialty form factors, tops. That’s it. Update them once a year, and keep the names the same.

Goodness knows you’re running out of names, anyway.

Zing.

What the Vaio Z says about Sony's little design problem - Boing Boing

What the Vaio Z says about Sony's little design problem - Boing Boing:
Great piece by Rob Beschizza for BoingBoing; I just got to it today in my Instapaper queue.

Love this bit:

But Sony rarely iterates, even when it’s onto something good. Everything is a one-off. It treats a billion-dollar business the way a microbrewery treats ales with silly names.

The rest of the piece illustrates how this is the opposite of Apple’s hardware design process.

And here:

Companies like Dell and HP will chance across good design every so often, but companies like Sony make good designs then abandon them intentionally because they’re blind to their own good design choices.

Hard to understand.

The Asus MacBook Air, sort of – Marco.org

The Asus MacBook Air, sort of – Marco.org:
Here are Marco’s notes on the Ars review of the Asus Zenbook. The question now is: even if the hardware is kind of half-assed, is it still worth getting one just to get into Amazon’s tablet ecosystem early? I think part of that will depend on price — if the hardware is lacking, the price will need to reflect that. Amazon has tons of room for error here. Let’s hope they see that, and act accordingly.

It sounds harsh, but when you can pick up the iPad 2 or the Galaxy Tab 2 for just $499, the $50 you save by getting a K1 doesn’t seem close to worth it — unless, of course, you think there’s some value in buggy software.

I really like this bit here:

Which is a long way of saying that everything on iOS is drawn using OpenGL. This is why animation on iOS is so hopelessly fast. You may have noticed that -drawRect is not called for each frame of an animation. It’s called once, then you draw your lines and circles and text onto an OpenGL surface (which you didn’t even realize), then Core Animation moves these surfaces around like pulling on the strings of a marionette. All the final compositing for each frame is done in hardware by the GPU.

The way Nick worded that really helped the concept of hardware acceleration (and how it helps the iOS devices) click for me, in a way it hasn’t before. Great piece.
