Nice layman’s write-up. Overall positive, but I love this line:
It feels odd pressing the IE icon for anything other than browser testing.
Made me chuckle.

Chris Ziegler on HTC Making It Rain (Phones) →
I enjoyed this piece on The Verge. Awesome bit here:
It’s simple: make a large high-end device, a smaller value device, and a QWERTY device. Maybe one or two other specialty form factors, tops. That’s it. Update them once a year, and keep the names the same.
Goodness knows you’re running out of names, anyway.
Zing.

Great piece by Rob Beschizza for BoingBoing; I just got to it today in my Instapaper queue.
Love this bit:
But Sony rarely iterates, even when it’s onto something good. Everything is a one-off. It treats a billion-dollar business the way a microbrewery treats ales with silly names.
The rest of the piece illustrates how this is the opposite of Apple’s hardware design process.

Here are Marco’s notes on the Ars review of the Asus Zenbook. The two photos of the Asus vs. the MacBook Air internals are astonishing. The layouts are identical.

More Amazon Tablet Details →
Way more info from MG Siegler about the Amazon tablet being announced tomorrow. The question now is: even if the hardware is kind of half-assed, is it still worth getting one just to get into Amazon’s tablet ecosystem early? I think part of that will depend on price — if the hardware is lacking, the price will need to reflect that. Amazon has tons of room for error here. Let’s hope they see that,...
Thanks to Todd at Celestial Teapot →
A quick thanks to Todd over at Celestial Teapot software. Not only does he write the single decent XML validator I could find, but he answers support email himself. On a Sunday. From his iPhone. And he finds bugs in like 2 minutes. Ninja.
Oh, and did I mention he writes another little app you may have heard of, called Fluid? Yes, that Fluid.
Thanks Todd!
Goddam ninja.

AT&T, T-Mobile Deal vs. the DOJ →
Bloomberg has the story. DOJ:
AT&T could obtain substantially the same network enhancements that it claims will come from the transaction if it simply invested in its own network without eliminating a close competitor.
Good point.

Joanna Stern Reviews Another Android Tablet →
Good times:
It sounds harsh, but when you can pick up the iPad 2 or the Galaxy Tab 2 for just $499, the $50 you save by getting a K1 doesn’t seem close to worth it — unless, of course, you think there’s some value in buggy software.

Nick Farina on developing for Android, from an iOS dev’s point of view.
I really like this bit here:
Which is a long way of saying that everything on iOS is drawn using OpenGL. This is why animation on iOS is so hopelessly fast. You may have noticed that -drawRect is not called for each frame of an animation. It’s called once, then you draw your lines and circles and text onto an...

Shawn Blanc on the HP TouchPad →
Wow. I was in the same camp that Shawn was before he started his testing: I really wanted to like webOS and the TouchPad.
I have heard so many good things about webOS that I was truly expecting to be impressed by the TouchPad and to enjoy webOS. Alas, using the TouchPad for the past week has not been impressive or enjoyable. And it’s not for a lack of apps — I was able to find a native...

iPhone lite/4GS/whatever →
Hmm. Interesting idea being rehashed (as it is every year before “new iPhone time”) about Apple releasing a lower-end, cheaper iPhone — and not the previous year’s model. Perhaps unlocked, perhaps meant for pre-paid plans, whatever.
But, here’s an idea: what if it’s Wi-Fi-only? As in, no data plan. You know, the iPhone that every non-technical family member asks you...

Frank Chimero on The Setup →
This bit absolutely kicked my ass:
In my case, the more I treasure a tool, the less likely I am to use it. I always scribble all over the first page because there’s no way I can make anything worse than that. So, we’re off to the races.
He’s talking about the Muji notebooks he likes to use. I always have this problem with Moleskins, and I never thought to defame them right off the bat —...

There is a horse in the Apple Store and no one sees it but me. I think, “Why?” What is the villain here that blinds all of these people to this situation? Am I nuts for thinking this is exceptional? Does anyone else see this? Did I accidentally drop acid and not realize? I must take a photo….

How To Take a Screenshot in Android →
A great story that really demonstrates the little things that make the iPhone shine. Also, this made me laugh out loud:
On Android, to get a screenshot you apparently need to become a developer first. There’s a tactic called “rooting” that I chose not to pursue because I’d like to go to sleep on the same day I woke up.
So funny. I’m really glad to hear Bartunde on...

iPhone 4.0 Hardware Guesses
(please note: all terrible art is my own.)
Let’s start by looking at the profile shape of the previous generation MacBooks and MacBook Pros, namely at the edges:
Note the angle of the curves at the corners — the flat top & bottom persist almost to the edge, with near uniform thickness throughout.
Now let’s look at the new Unibody-enclosure machines:
You can see the...

Not cool for Marco, but okay for George Lucas →
Wow, what a great find. This is complete BS. If Apple is going to insist on enforcing these overly sensitive “copyrighted images” rules, then this pick-and-choose on who actually has to follow them is going to get old fast. Are we to assume that the LucasArts people were sitting in their offices for weeks, wringing their hands and hoping they wouldn’t get some stupid rejection...
